The prime minister's office is located in Parliament and many other prime ministers have their own office as well. The prime minister usually maintains a large entourage that includes the prime minister's secretaries, advisers, and cabinet ministers.

Prime ministers often attend formal meetings and conferences with foreign leaders. Many times when visiting a country the prime minister will make a state visit, which means they will come to the country as a tourist but may be called upon to make official statements. The prime minister usually makes his or her first public address from a chair in front of a large portrait of themselves. Most prime ministers are sworn into office by the Governor General while other prime ministers are sworn into office by the Prime Minister of Canada.

Many times during the course of their term of office, a prime minister will face opposition from members of his/her party and from other political parties and individuals. This may occur at the House of Representatives, Senate, provincial legislature, or federal legislature. It can also take place in the House of Commons or Senate during an election.

Many times, prime ministers will make decisions that affect the country for a long period of time. These include the decision to use force against a country in a war, the use of nuclear weapons, the use of force against international terrorists, or the use of force to protect the country from another nation's invasion. The prime minister may decide to withdraw Canada from a war and this may be seen as the beginning of a new war. Many people are not familiar with what the terms mean or how to describe a prime ministers, so it is best to familiarize oneself with their history and see how to describe them before making a decision. In short, a prime minister is a head of government who leads the political representatives of a government and is responsible for the direction of that government.
