Aloe vera, also known as a cactus plant, is a succulent plant species belonging to the family of Mimulus. The common name for this succulent plant comes from its resemblance to a leaf, and it is widely used as a medicinal plant in the Middle East. In fact, ancient Greeks and Egyptians called it a "plant of immortality". An evergreen perennial herb, it first originated from the arid, desert regions of the Arabian Peninsula, but has now spread to other parts of the world. The aloe vera plant grows on the ground, along fences and walls, in flowerbeds and on the exterior surfaces of trees and shrubs. These succulents grow up to 12 meters tall. They are available in different colors and shapes; some have bright purple blooms, others have green, yellow or blue flowers, while others have red or white flowers. The leaves of the aloe vera plant contain a substance called "aloesan".
A variety of medicinal benefits are associated with aloe vera, among them being the treatment of wounds, burns, infections, inflammation and burns.
